Steven Strait On ‘The Expanse’ & Greenwich Village Upbringing

Steven Strait (Magic City, City Island) stars in the upcoming series The Expanse, which is based on James S.A. Corey’s bestselling, sci-fi book series about the search for a missing young woman. A hard nosed detective (Thomas Jane) and a ne’er do well ice hauler named Jim Holden (Strait) play important roles in this journey, which eventually leads to the uncovering of a wide-reaching conspiracy.

Strait, who read the first two books in the series, said one of the reasons he “desperately” wanted to join the project centered on Holden’s journey:

“He goes from being, when you meet him,  a second officer in an ice hauler, which is kind of a modern day oil tanker, (and he’s) living a life of anonymity. Running from any real responsibility and not wanting to answer to anyone, (until) his very simple act of answering this distress call sets off a series of events – dominoes that continue to fall. And he inadvertently becomes the face of socio-political tension in the solar system.”

Regarding his own path, Strait discusses the impact of Greenwich Village on his artistic life. During his early years he studied his craft at the famed Stella Adler Acting Studio and one can see the nuances of his talent at work in such projects as Magic City (the series is getting a new chapter in the cinema) and the charming, slice of life comedy City Island.

“My creative process is the that way I process the world around me,” says Strait. “I’m incredibly grateful for what acting has given to me.”

****Just a little sidenote randomness – if they ever did a remake of A Place In The Sunit’d be a tailor made role for Strait.

The Expanse debuts December 14 on Syfy (10 pm et/pt).
