New York City’s Hidden Gems Offer Magic & Skin Deep Pleasures

As fall is “falling” away from us and we enter into the colder winter months, I would like to share some of my “hidden gems.” Now, this is New York City, a city of 8 million people. So sadly nothing is “really” that hidden nor exclusive anymore. I mean I’m not Beyonce or anything! However, when the weather drops, and a nightly park stroll is out of the question, these 3 stops are my go to spots. So whether you are in the mood for Southeast Asian cuisine in the Lower East Side, getting pampered on a dime in Chelsea, or some mind blowing magic in Flatiron District– then please read on my friends!!

Concert Seen of the Week: Ultimate Jam Night at Lucky Strike Live

Ultimate Jam Night

Getting up for work on Thursday mornings has been a little more difficult since Ultimate Jam Night started their Wednesday night shows back in January.  Where else can you catch some of rock’s heaviest hitters on their off night?  The weekly show, founded by Chuck Wright of Quiet Riot,  features unrehearsed jams from a bevy of touring musicians; everyone from Sebastian Bach to Leif Garrett has hit the stage.

This week, Ultimate Jam Night pulls out all the stops as Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette, the legendary Eat ‘Em and Smile band from David Lee Roth’s debut solo album, reunite for the first time in 30 years.  Ralph Saenz from Steel Panther will be filling in on vocals for a performance you do not want to miss.

A few of the other guests this Wednesday include John 5 (Rob Zombie/Marilyn Manson), Evan Seinfeld (Sons of Anarchy, Biohazard, Attika 7) Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper) Phil X (Bon Jovi) Rafael Moreira (Paul Stanley/American Idol/Pink), Lucky Lehrer and Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks.)

Ultimate Jam Night is held at Lucky Strike Live located at the Hollywood/Highland center.  The show begins at 8:30pm, and admission is free.

If attending, please consider bring some warm clothes for Mama D Feeds the Homeless.  They are asking for hoodies, blankets, hats and gloves, or you can send a Paypal donation to jsoren@mac.com.

Paris Days And Nights Are A “Moveable Feast”

Paris - CR: Deandra Miranda

Sunday morning – 9 am. I am pretending to watch football at my friend’s house. He turns to me and asks, ” Hey, don’t you have to pack? You are leaving to Paris tonight right?”  I aloofly answer, “Yeah, I’m suppose to…. But, don’t think I’m leaving tonight!” He gives me a confused look and changes the subject in fear of why I am so nonchalant.

Kate Hudson Conducts “BitterSweet” Symphony With Campari Calendar

Kate Hudson - Campari

Oscar nominated actress Kate Hudson (“Almost Famous,” “Nine”) has collaborated with Campari, Italy’s beloved red aperitif, for a Calendar collection titled “The BitterSweet Campaign.” The word bittersweet is the perfect description for Campari’s flavor profile, and this year’s Calendar is encouraging fans to cast their vote via social media for their preferred flavor (#goBitter or #goSweet).

Concert Seen of the Week: Toadies at Hotel Cafe

Kirtland Records
Kirtland Records

It was 1994 when Toadies first graced the airwaves, with a sinister guitar line and the unique and powerful voice of Vaden Todd Lewis leading the alterna-hit “Possum Kingdom.” For a good portion of the ’90s, you couldn’t escape the song if you listened to alternative radio. Add in songs like “Tyler” and “Backslider,” and the Rubberneck album became a “must have” disc for any self-respecting rock lover.  Continue reading “Concert Seen of the Week: Toadies at Hotel Cafe”

TV Seen of the Week – ‘Jessica Jones’ (Netflix)

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is the second in a series of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows that will air on Netflix. The 13 hour-long episodes, based on the Marvel comic Alias, will be released simultaneously on November 20th.

Jessica Jones tells the dark tale of a damaged former superhero who opens her own detective agency after the end of her career.  Don’t expect a lot of super heroics in this series though, Jessica Jones is a noir drama, more gritty Veronica Mars than Black Widow.  Jessica suffers with PTSD, and the themes of trauma and abuse are tightly wound throughout the series.

The series stars Krysten Ritter, best for her role as Chloe in Don’t Trust the B—— in Apartment 23, and as Jesse’s girlfriend Jane in Breaking Bad.  The series protagonist, Kilgrave, is played by David Tennant, best known as Doctor Who’s tenth doctor, and Luke Cage (aka Power Man), is played by Mike Colter.

Netflix has carved out a successful collaborative relationship with Marvel, as Jessica Jones follows the critically acclaimed Daredevil, and will be followed by Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and finally Marvel’s Defenders miniseries, where all of the aforementioned characters will team up.  Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that if the characters prove popular on Netflix, as Daredevil certainly has, then “It’s quite possible that they could become feature films.”

An early screening of Jessica Jones at New York Comic Con was met with a very positive response, and early reviews for the series have been overwhelmingly favorable.

The show was initially developed for ABC television, which hosts Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter.
