It was 1994 when Toadies first graced the airwaves, with a sinister guitar line and the unique and powerful voice of Vaden Todd Lewis leading the alterna-hit “Possum Kingdom.” For a good portion of the ’90s, you couldn’t escape the song if you listened to alternative radio. Add in songs like “Tyler” and “Backslider,” and the Rubberneck album became a “must have” disc for any self-respecting rock lover.
Flash forward to 2015 and Toadies are back with a new disc titled Heretics that re-imagines many of their bigger songs with new, more stripped back arrangements. The disc also finds Lewis and his cohorts drummer Mark Reznicek, guitarist Clark Vogeler and bassist Doni Blair taking on a cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” as well as a pair of fresh tracks — “In the Belly of a Whale” and “Queen of Scars.” Check out “In the Belly of a Whale” performed on The Texas Music Scene below.
The Toadies are coming back to L.A. on their current tour leg, playing the Hotel Cafe Friday night (Nov. 20). And this is a perfect venue for such a show as the Toadies are guaranteed to make the most of this intimate setting. It’s a different kind of show for the band, one that provides some unique challenges. It’s one that you shouldn’t miss and you’ll have two chances to see them.
The band is playing two sets on Friday with the early show starting at 7:30, while the late show is scheduled for 10:30. Tickets for the early show can be purchased here, while the late show tickets can be found here.
