This Is Us actors Susan Kelechi Watson and Sterling K. Brown are absolutely believable as Beth and Randall Pearson. Part of that believability may come from the foundation that both actors built over the years. For Watson, a pivotal summer for her was during a trip abroad to study the craft (with an emphasis on Shakespeare) at BADA. Check out the video below as Watson explains how Phylicia Rashad and Denzel Washington helped sponsor her educational experience.
“She paid for a group of us to go study Shakespeare at BADA in Oxford and she not only did that – there was 10 of us that wanted to go that summer and said, ‘You know what I’m going to sponsor five of you (and) I’m going to call Denzel Washington and he’ll sponsor the other five’ and that’s what he did.
I was one of the five that Denzel sponsored . . . So the ten of us were able to go because she called her famous friend and they split the bill. Phylicia is so about getting the right education, really learning your craft, and coming from a place of truth. Being under her wing for as many years as I was – was a really remarkable thing.” – Susan Kelechi Watson on BADA and Phylicia Rashad
