Cailee Spaeny is Amara Namani, a strong willed mechanic who builds her own Jaeger to fight Kaijus in Pacific Rim Uprising. It was a life changing experience for the actress, and we have audio below from Spaeny (courtesy of Front Row Features) to prove that very point!
Cailee Spaeny, a Springfield, Missouri native, makes her feature film debut with Pacific Rim Uprising, and since then she’s landed several other high profile roles (she’s currently shooting director Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale with Chris Hemsworth and Dakota Johnson).
Along with the rigorous physical training and diet that was part of the Pacific Rim Uprising experience, Spaeny had never been out of the country.
“I’d been on a plane maybe a couple of times but I’d never done anything like that,” said Spaeny. “So my whole life changed – being on a movie set for the first time, acting on film for the first time, going on a plane across the ocean, getting a passport. So many new beginnings. It was crazy.”
Most of Spaeny’s scenes were with headliner John Boyega, and she credits him with helping her through the green screen scenes as well as giving her supportive career advice.
“Off set, I’d be worried about the business side of things like ‘Am I going to book a job? I haven’t gotten my next job. Everybody’s booking.'” said Spaeny. “And he’s like, ‘It’s okay. You don’t need to think about that right now. It’s all going to fall in place when it needs to.’ He did see a little bit of himself in me when he was going through with all that and he still checks up on me . . . he’s amazing.”
Speaking of amazing, take a listen below to hear Cailee Spaeny discuss how she started on her acting path, a road which initially began with a passion for music and community theater:
